Safety & Security Tips

Work Areas
  • Lock your office door whenever you leave, even if you're just going out for a minute
  • Take care of your keys. Don't leave them in your "cubby" or other hiding place
  • Do not prop open doors. If you find a door propped on campus, close it or report it to Public Safety
  • Know where fire alarms and emergency exits are located
  • Observe the university's fire prevention regulations
  • Become familiar with the Emergency Evacuation Plan, and if you smell smoke or see a fire, pull the fire alarm and leave the building immediately
  • When a fire alarm sounds, leave the building immediately and report to the appropriate location. Do not wait to see if it is a false/malfunctioning alarm.
  • Notify the Department of Public Safety at ext. 9700 of any emergency, criminal activity, suspicious conditions or suspicious subjects.

Campus Grounds

  • Avoid taking shortcuts through alleys or isolated areas.
  • Do not walk alone to your vehicle. After class, walk in groups to the parking facilities.
  • Be aware of who is watching you. Look around; take notice of people, vehicles around you.
  • Do not look like a "victim." Walk with head erect, eyes front making eye contact with those you pass. Walk with a purpose.
  • Do not talk on cell phone or listen to iPod, etc. - anything that distracts your attention.
  • If something or someone "just doesn't look or feel right" it probably isn't. Avoid the situation, turn and walk in the opposite direction or cross the street. Get to a more public area and call Public Safety at 603.645.9700 - place this number is your cell phone.
  • Use the Escort service.

Property Security

  • Never leave your backpack, wallet, purse, or other valuables unattended.
  • Even if you are going to be gone for "just a minute" take your belongings with you.
  • Don't leave easily stolen items, such as your wallet, checkbook, jewelry, CD player, or laptop in open view.
  • Do not keep large sums of money in your office, classroom, or backpack.
  • Engrave your driver's license number and not Social Security number on all valuables you want protected.

Vehicle Security

  • Have keys ready when approaching your vehicle. Check for intruders before you enter the car. Check under the car, back seat, or take notice of anyone sitting in a car adjacent to your vehicle.
  • Lock the car doors immediately upon entering your vehicle.
  • Close all windows and lock all doors when leaving your vehicle, whether it's for a few minutes or several hours.
  • Lock all valuables in the trunk. Leave NOTHING in plain view in the passenger compartment of your vehicle.
  • At night, park in well-lighted areas.
  • Do not attach your name, address or license tag number to your key ring.
  • Never pick up a hitchhiker or hitchhike yourself.
  • Always keep your gas tank at least half full.
  • Know where you are. Know the names of the streets, alleys, highway exits, etc. If you have to summon help, directing the police to your location is critical.
  • If your vehicle breaks down in an isolated area, raise the hood, lock the doors, and stay inside. If someone stops to help, ask him or her to call the police (if you do not have a cell phone, of course). Sound the horn if you feel threatened.
