System Status Log 2006

  • December 2, 2006 Several Servers Down Friday Evening
The Informer, Redhat, penpalbu, ecommerce, blackboardweb, ce blackboard and a script sever shutdown last evening. The cause was a wall socket failure, then the UPS's ran out of battery life. The UPS's were recharged and repairs were needed to the file structure on a few of the linux servers. They are all currently up and running.
  • December 1, 2006 Penpal System Down

  • October 3, 2006 Email System Update
There have been several recent incidents of rejected e-mail, and we have identified the cause but not yet identified the source of the problem. Virus-generated e-mails containing ZIP attachments are flooding our e-mail system, causing normal e-mail messages to be undeliverable. Until we find the source of these e-mails, DCR has stopped the receipt of all e-mails containing ZIP attachments.  This can be a hardship for some students, faculty and staff, but it is necessary to keep all e-mail flowing as it should. As soon as the source is discovered the blocking of ZIP attachments can be lifted.

  • June 29, 2006 Planned Blackboard Outage Update
The Blackboard upgrade process went well. The Site was actually down from Midnight on Wednesday, to 10:00PM Thursday evening, which was much shorter than expected. As a reminder, you may now notice minor changes to the look and feel of the system as well as some new features to enhance the teaching and learning experience. Thank you for your patience as this important upgrade was performed.
  • June 21, 2006 Planned Blackboard Outage
In order to improve the performance and functionality of Blackboard, an upgrade is scheduled to begin at midnight on Wednesday, June 28th. This upgrade requires that the Blackboard system be taken offline for up to 48 hours. While technical staff will try to complete the upgrade in the shortest time possible to minimize impact on users, it could take up to two days because of Blackboard’s large volume of classes and student/faculty files.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause but these dates were chosen because the fewest number of users will be affected. It is always a challenge to schedule updates with SNHU’s year-round course schedules and these decisions are made after serious consideration of the impact on the campus community. When Blackboard is back online you may notice some minor changes to the look and feel of the system as well as some new features to enhance the teaching and learning experience. Instructional Support will be offering training on these new features during the summer and the fall semester.

The problem was caused by our Internet Service Provider (ISP), who was attempting to shut down one computer on campus that was generating volumes of traffic.  The ISP inadvertently shut down service to the entire campus and did not inform us nor their technical support group of this action.

  • Feb 23, 2006 SNHU's Acadlist listserv mailing list issues
Over the past week or so you may have noticed problems with some listserv e-mails (i.e.: messages being delivered multiple times and slow send times). Computing Resources is working to identify and resolve these issues. While the underlying cause of the problem has not yet been identified, we have determined that the problem is affecting e-mail messages which include attachments. Emails with attachments that are sent to “@acadlist.snhu.edu” e-mail addresses are being delivered multiple times and these messages are in turn degrading the ability of Acadlist to send out all other messages in a timely manner.

Until a fix for the problem can be identified and implemented, Acadlist will remain in operation as it is an important communication tool for many areas of the university. We are asking that if you do send messages that they not include any attachments. Sending attachments now will undoubtedly cause your message to be sent multiple times. Once you send the message, Computing Resources cannot stop this from happening and system performance will suffer for everyone else. Acadlist’s performance should be satisfactory if no attachments are sent.

We are aware that many of you rely on your listservs heavily and that this has been an inconvenience. We are doing everything we can to pinpoint the source of the problem. As updates are available the information will be posted.
