ADA/504 Compliance Committee
After the passage of section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 some faculty and staff recognized that there were minimal guidelines for dealing with students with disabilities. By the late 1970s, it became imperative that some type of system be created to address this issue. The institution's HELP Committee grew out of this need. Originally this committee was created to address specific student issues and to look into environmental accommodations needed to comply with the law. Through time, however, it became more focused on dealing with specific issues of individual students.
Over the past few years the numbers of Southern New Hampshire University students who have both visible and hidden disabilities have been steadily increasing. The passage of The Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 broadened the scope of the previous law. As the University plans for new construction and as students' needs increase, it is important to be planning for the future. In 1995, the HELP Committee members developed a strategy to create a new larger committee, the ADA/504 Compliance Committee, to deal with policies and procedures and to create a plan for Southern New Hampshire University to follow in maintaining its excellent reputation for creative and appropriate compliance.
The ADA/504 Compliance Committee will deal with broad-based disability issues related to providing full program and educational access at Southern New Hampshire University. This committee will be visionary and proactive in its work.
The purposes of the Committee are the following:
To review current policy and procedures and make recommendations for change
To review plans for facilities development to ensure that they meet the future needs of our community
To ensure dissemination of policy
To research grants and resources needed to make accommodations
To review current technology on campus as well as technological needs that enhance academic access
To make recommendations for campus education
