As a high school senior, Nicole Doane didn’t have SNHU on her radar, at first.
“I visited SNHU on a whim,” says the Lynn, Mass., native. “My parents signed me up for a tour, and I said, ‘No way am I going to a small university in New Hampshire.’”
During the visit, she changed her mind.
“We had a really good tour guide, and I liked the way they did the presentation,” Nicole says. “I liked the people I met. I liked the campus, and I liked that it was growing, that I could be a big fish in a small pond.”
Nicole started SNHU as a secondary education major.
“I had tutored in high school, and I really liked it,” she says.
But by the end of freshman year, she had decided on college teaching.
“My professors were patient with me,” she says. “They talked about different schools, different programs, studying for the GREs. They instilled in me, ‘It’s not easy. It takes a long time.
Four years later, with a bachelor’s degree in English language and literature, Nicole headed to graduate school at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.
“My professors at SNHU are the reason I want to teach at the college level,” she says. “They expected a little bit more and pushed me a little more, and I’m thankful for each of them.”
