In 2010, an earthquake unhinged Haiti. Just a month from graduation, Schultz D’Meza Pierre Louise's '12 not only lost his home and many friends, he also lost his chance at completing his degree. A month into a search for work, Schultz met Annette Tuttle '84 and '87. Together, the two administered aid in a malaria relief clinic. Moved by his spirit, drive and devastatingly bad luck, Annette hatched a plan; she would ask her alma mater to sponsor the educational opportunity that Schultz lost to the quake.
Eight months later, Schultz was a student in SNHU's Global MBA program on a quest to help Haiti develop. ''When I enrolled at SNHU, I was driven to be an agent of development for my homeland,'' Schultz says. ''But change doesn’t come as easily as I once imagined.''
Two years of studying economic theory and its practical application has led Schultz to realize that the services he wants to bring to Haiti need first to take root at the institutional level before they can effect change on the ground.
''I want to see greater job creation through strong institutions,'' Schultz says. ''In Haiti we have a shaky system and foreign investment is lacking. International financial institutions like the World Bank or IMF can make loans. I see myself working at one of these institutions to facilitate the better circulation of these loans through Haiti.''
Schultz is currently applying to international Ph.D. programs.
''My Global MBA from SNHU handed me the key to the gates of a world of opportunity.''
