Community Economic Development (MS) Admission Requirements

Admissions criteria:

  • Completed bachelor’s degree (note: the CED Program accepts a limited number of students who have not completed a bachelor’s degree*)
  • Work experience in community economic development or a related field, e.g., working or volunteering for community-based organizations; community development corporations; cooperatives; microfinance institutions; government agencies and nonprofit organizations in the fields of housing, neighborhood revitalization, urban or rural development, job creation and workforce development, community finance, community resource management, human services, and the like
    • For someone with a completed bachelor’s degree, minimum of 2 years of work or volunteering experience
    • For someone without a completed bachelor’s degree, minimum of 5 years of work or volunteering experience
  •  For someone without a completed bachelor’s degree, two letters of recommendation from local community leaders
  • Computer literacy and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent software
  • Reliable Internet access
  • International applicants must be proficient in English and have a TOEFL score of 550 or an IETLS score of 6.0 or higher
  • Application requirements:

    • a completed application;
    • a transcript showing your undergraduate coursework and degree;
    • for international applicants, document containing TOEFL or IETLS score
    • a professional resume or curriculum vitae ; and
    • a one- to two-page typed personal statement describing work experience, and goals and expectations pertinent to a M.S. in CED degree.
    *The M.S. in CED program accepts a limited number of students who have not completed a bachelor’s degree yet show exceptional promise.  These applicants must go through an extensive waiver process that requires them to demonstrate the ability to work at the graduate level.  If admitted, these students must earn a 3.0 GPA in their first term in order to remain in the program.  Details of the waiver process will be addressed during the admissions process.
