What Can I Expect?

When you call and ask for an appointment you will be scheduled for a meeting with one of the professional counseling staff. When you arrive you will be asked to complete some paperwork and then will meet with a counselor. During the initial meeting the counselor will take notes and information will be obtained which will allow the counseling staff to determine which service will best meet your needs. At the end of the initial meeting the counselor will discuss his/her recommendations. This may include continued contact with Wellness Center staff, referral to another office on campus or referral to an outside agency.

Typically counseling sessions are for 45-60 minutes once or twice a week during the academic year. There is one professional staff member available through the summer months. The Southern New Hampshire University Counseling Service provides focused short term counseling and if it is determined that longer term counseling or more complete support services are needed an off campus referral will be made.

If there is an after hours emergency an RA, RD or Public Safety can try to contact a Wellness Center counselor. If a counselor is not available or you do not wish to deal with a Residence Life Staff member/Public Safety Officer you may contact emergency services at your local mental health center.
