Counseling Confidentiality

A professional code of ethics guides counselors in matters of confidentiality. Information gained in counseling sessions will not be disclosed outside of the Wellness Center Counseling Staff except in cases of consultation with other counseling professionals, consultation with direct supervisors or in those instances required by law. State and Federal statutes require that confidentiality be broken in the following circumstances: 1) When necessary to protect you or someone else from imminent danger, 2) in cases of suspected child abuse or elder abuse or 3) in rare instances when the court orders records to be disclosed. 4) if you disclose an incident of hazing, or 5) if you report being sexually harassed by a University employee.
