Resource Guide to Wellness Center Films

The Wellness Center is pleased to offer you an array of videotapes to choose from when planning your next class or program. These videotapes are arranged by the category to which they are best suited though many of these films address multiple issues. If more than one copy of the film or videotape is available, the number of copies is indicated in parentheses.

As a rule, we like to have a Wellness Center staff member at each program to answer questions and/or help facilitate the discussion following the film. Special persmission must be obtained to borrow videotapes under any circumstance.

    ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUGS (AOD) )

    Choices (1986)
    17 minutes, (2)

    Choices have to be made every time each of us considers taking a drink. When to drink, how much, drinking before working out, and drinking while taking other drugs are just a few of the decisions that students face in this film by BACCHUS. Suggestions are also provided regarding confronting a problem drinker, dealing with an intoxicated person, and planning a "smoother" party.

    Cruel Spirits: Alcohol and Violence
    32 minutes

    Everyday, thousands of Americans get drunk and, in many instances, something violent occurs; shouting, fist fights, child or spouse abuse, assaults, car wrecks or other accidents resulting in injuries or death. "Cruel Spirits" reveals how alcohol is often responsible, yet rarely blamed for these tragedies, and that the extent of alcohol-related violence is both grossly underestimated and underreported.

    Eddy Gets Better: A Personal Story of Addiction and Recovery (1989)

    This video takes a perosnal view of addiction issues. "Eddy Gets Better" is a sequel to the ever popular "Eddy Talks", and in this episode Eddy has recently returned from chemical dependency treatment. A very confrontive challenge about the necessary support that Eddy now needs.

    Eddy Talks: A Comedy/Drama About a Problem Drinker (1989)

    The video "Eddy Talks" takes a hard look at the collegiate problem drinker. The video offers an opportunity to recognize symptoms and attitudes sometimes encountered with students on campus. The tape is perfect for orientation programs, student personnel training and other alcohol education programs.

    Expert Testimony (1992)
    25 minutes

    An "expert" comes to class to lecture about alcohol issues, but the real "experts" turn out to be the students who show us inside their personal lives, giving us unique perspectives on issues such as dysfunctional families, addiction and recovery, impaired driving prevention and sex under the influence. This video offers a wide range of topics relevant to all college audiences today.

    Good Times at UVA: A Look Back (1988)

    "Good Times at UVA: A Look Back" is a poignant discussion with three former University of Virginia students about their drinking years and the problems they encountered while in school. Their stories are eye-opening experiences that challenge one to consider how easy it is to "enable" a substance abuser to sink deeper into trouble.

    Remembering Eddy: A Video About Confrontation and Personal Responsibility (1992)

    The third entry and final installment of the "Eddy Series" finds Eddy the victim of an impaired driving accident and his friends and loved ones confronting how they might or might not have been able to prevent an avoidable outcome. This tape takes a serious look at the roles we give those close to us, our fears of confrontation, our misconceptions about recovery and the personal responsibilities we all have to support those in need in our university communities. A very moving video.

    Say Something (1992)

    "Say Something" utilizes a blend of skits, factual information and personal accounts from recovering substance abusers to reach faculty and staff audiences. The film is intended to remind us of the lives our students are leading and to encourage us to do something - to Say Something if a student is experiencing problems related to substance abuse.

    The Truth About Drinking (1998)

    In this program, teens who are current drinkers see first hand what the future may hold for them if they continue to drink. They experience the potential consequences of alcohol use from every perspective, including, (1) how drinking impairs a person's coordination, vision, and reaction time; (2) how the brain and other organs suffer lasting damage from alcohol use; (3) how a drunk person really drives; and (4) how drinking can lead to spending months in a rehabilitation center.

    Best Kept to Myself - Act One (1992)
    30 Minutes

    This first videotape in a series uses the format of two combined dramatic and musical performances, each highlighting issues and questions for discussion. The first section deals with the different issues faced when living in a dysfunctional home, and the second takes a look at homophobia.

    Best Kept to Myself - Act Two (1992)
    25 Minutes

    The second in the "Best Kept" series, this tape uses the same format of combined performances. The first section deals with sexual abuse, and its impact on identity and communication skills; the second section concentrates on self-esteem; the people who feel they are not "good enough".

    Best Kept to Myself - Act Three(1992)
    30 minutes

    "Act Three" follows the same format as the first two in the "Best Kept to Myself" series. In the first section we hear some of the classic excuses and defensiveness that comes with marijuana use. The second section explores the guild, confusion, and doubt that often are a part of being a child of divorced parents.

    This film speaks to the issue of getting a tattoo, the pros and cons, and the safety issues of tattooing.

    The Changing Face of Beauty (1999)
    45 minutes

    Even as women achieve greater and greater equality in the workplace, in politics and at home, they are faced with the stark reality that their success can hinge on conforming to rigid beauty standards. Hosted and executive-produced by actress and over-40 beauty Sela Ward, this program examines real women's ironic, indignant and often poignant attitudes toward this country's pervasive beauty culture. Women of all ages and careers explain how they have been affected by this phenomenon, and how they have been able to break free from its constraints and redefine "beauty" to suit their purposes.

    What would you do as a fraternity and sorority leader if your campus was considering eliminating its Greek system? This tape shows a young man and a young woman facing the challenge of saving their Greek community while having to confront issues such as risk management, values and ethics, and sexual assault. Along the way they discover that while change is always necessary, it comes with huge leadership stresses. Perfect for greek leadership programming, member education and officer training.

    Life in the Stress lane (1992)

    More than 80% of those responding to a recent national poll said they "need less stress" in their lives. This film will show you how to survive stress by using the following tactics: setting priorities, exercise and deep breathing , organizing time, visualization, listening to your body, and talking positively to yourself. The videotape also includes a 20-question self scoring quiz which allows you to compare yourself with famous Americans and how they handle stress.

    SEXUAL ASSAULT

    Acquaintance Rape: The Broken Trust (1992)

    "Acquaintance Rape" addresses the most common form of sexual assault: rape by a friend. Acquaintance rape of date rape, continues to occur, in part because so many people are misinformed about the crime. "Acquaintance Rape" covers many myths surrounding this form of sexual assualt such as confronting the rapist, and reducing the risks.

    Campus Rape (1990)

    This documentary-style film hosted by L.A. Law stars Susan Dey and Corbin Bernsen, examins campus rape and its impact through interviews with four college students who were assaulted on different campuses. Two of the students were attacked by strangers; the other two were assaulted by acquaintances. The film also includes interviews with college students who discuss their attitudes about rape, sex-role stereotypes, and communication beetween men and women. In addition, the film presents many effective techniques for preventing both stranger and acquaintance rape.

    A Delicate Balance: Sexual Assault Cases in the Campus Judicial System (1993)
    25 minutes

    This videotape is one of three parts of a training program designed to educate campus judicial boards about sexual assault cases. Scenes from the videotape include two roommates discussing and reporting a sexual assault; negative and positive illustrations of a judicial officer responding to a student who reports a sexual assault; and hearing. Viewers see the victim and accused tell their stories in the hearing, and they see appropriate and inappropriate questioning techniques. They also see a discussion of consent, coercion, and the use of alcohol-important issues in deciding a sexual assault case.

    When a Kiss is Not Just a Kiss: Sex Without Consent (1994)

    Taped before a live audience of first year college students. When a Kiss is Not Just a Kiss includes pertinent sexual assault information, a live "issue-based drama" depicting a non-consensual sexual encounter, and an interactive exercise with the participation from the student audience.

    Challenge Bigotry: An Educational-Training Video and Booklet for Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Speaker Panels (1996)
    45 minutes

    Challenge Bigotry is an educational video that speaks to the issues of gay, lesbian and bisexual people on campus in a direct and profound way. Useful for: Training students for panels; assisting counseling centers; improving existing panel programs; education in the classroom; faculty and staff development.

    Investigative Reports: Transgender Revolution (1998)
    50 minutes

    What does it mean to be a man or woman? In America's growing transexual community, this question takes on a whole new and powerful meaning. Investigative Reports goes beyong ignorance and stereotypes for an intimate portrayal of the people who choose to change their sexuality. Among the unexpected, ferociously articulate characters we meet are a female to male transexual who works for the Tampa sheriff's office, a male to female electrical designer who has hosted an MIT radio show called Gendertalk and a Southern good-old boy who we follow through his surgical transformation. The TRANSGENDER REVOLUTION also examines the fast growing movement to combat gender oppression, highlighting the nation's most notorious transexual killings and a Congressional battle over including transexuals in the Hate Crime Act.

    No Greater Love (1993)
    15 minutes

    "No Greater Love", a progressive HIV prevention film, shows safer sex in a format similar to the advertising techniques of Calvin Klein. Low risk options to high risk behaviors are portrayed in three vignettes. Each vignette addresses diverse ethnicities and sexual orientations, showing couples either negotiating condom use or postponing intercourse. Please be advised that material and subject matter contained in this film might be upsetting to viewers. This film must be previewed before showing to an audience.

    Stopping the Spread of HIV and AID(1996)

    This video shows how HIV/AIDS is transmitted, how to prevent it and the consequences of not having safe sex.

    Time Out (1992)
    42 minutes

    Join stars Paula Abdul, Luke Perry, Sinbad, Pauly Shore, Jaleel White, and many, many more as they take an entertaining, music-filled and honest look at HIV and AIDS. The video includes important facts as well as some tips on the "dos and don'ts" when engaging in sexual activity.
