SNHU Outright


HISTORY
In the Wellness Center's 1996-97 goals and objectives was a commitment to initiate a campus wide project to address sexual diversity at New Hampshire College (now Southern New Hampshire University). In the spring of 1997, a core group of College faculty and staff began meeting. Membership in NHC Outright expanded in the 1997-98 school year to include students and the committee was formally named NHC Outright.

MISSION
To create a campus climate that is sensitive to and addresses the needs of a sexually diverse population.

GOALS

  • To identify and designate safe zones on campus
  • To establish a network of individuals willing to serve as allies for students and staff struggling with sexual identity issues or in need of support related to their identity
  • To initiate a series of programs/efforts (e.g. presentations, movies, publications, posters) that address sexual diversity and increase visibility on campus
  • To designate a specific reading section in the library on sexual diversity and encourage curriculum infusion
  • To generate and circulate a brochure about issues facing the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered population
  • To provide activities/events that socially connect the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered populations

    SELECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • An official committee identity - SNHU Outright, A Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Educational Effort on Campus
  • Development of a mission statement and goals
  • Inclusion of sexual orientation in the official non-discrimination policy of the College
  • Development and implementation of a Safe Zones program that includes more than 45 allies on campus
  • Production and distribution of an informational brochure on sexual orientation
  • The appearance of Jason Stuart, an openly gay entertainer, as part of the Spectrum Series
  • Coordination and sponsorship of a P-FLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) panel presentation on issues of coming out
  • Development and implementation of a campus climate survey to assess programming ideas
  • Sponsored a forum on the moral and legal reasons to favor gay marriage
  • Supporting students in the establishment of a SOAR group on campus.
