For Michele Capra, “hospitality” isn’t just her major; it’s a way of life. Since she enrolled in Southern New Hampshire University's hospitality program, Michele has been learning while she serves and serving while she learns.
Michele is a star student and a member of Eta Sigma Delta, the hospitality management honor society. She’s also integrated service learning into her studies.
“Most of my classes are very hands-on. We work at hotels, in the community, in the Chamber of Commerce. I’ve learned so much about service learning,” she says.
One year Michele taught international children basic reading and math skills at an elementary school in Manchester. She planned to eventually reach out to the children’s parents and help them with skills such as healthy cooking, which would draw on her culinary expertise. She has organized events to help homeless teenagers in Manchester, and served as the operations chair for a major benefit for the hungry. She also traveled to Virginia with the university’s service learning organization, the Outreach Club, to build a home for a family.
How does Michele maintain such a high level of energy and commitment? Part of the answer is the strong community at SNHU.
“I’ve made so many connections, not only with students, but with professors, too. Great connections,” she says. “The small school atmosphere makes you feel important -- people know you.”
