The Residence Agreement
The contract you make with Southern New Hampshire University for the use of your residence is reproduced below.
All residents are reminded that consideration for others is the basic component of community living. The resolution of issues concerning privacy, cleanliness, smoking, etc. calls for sensitivity to others’ needs and appropriate changes in students’ behavior.
Residents are expected to be aware of the effects of their actions and respond accordingly. New students-except graduate students, married students or students living with parents are required to live in university housing for a minimum of two semesters. Acceptance to the university, however, is not a guarantee of accommodation. If housing is available and offered to a student, the minimum contract is for one academic year (two consecutive undergraduate semesters or graduate terms).
The university may reassign students to maintain maximum occupancy. Any available space may be used whenever necessary. Rooms with vacancies should be kept neat and clean so that such assignments are possible. This includes not placing your belongings in the unassigned portion of the room (or unused furniture).
Once students request and are assigned housing, they are responsible for the full cost of the room and board. A student must petition the director of residence life in writing to apply for release from the housing agreement. Filing this request does not constitute release. Any granted release from housing will take effect no sooner than at the end of the academic term in which the request is submitted. Students who vacate their rooms without a release will continue to be responsible for these costs.
The residence agreement allows the university to inspect rooms at regularly scheduled intervals in order to maintain healthy and safe conditions. Inspections will be announced beforehand and will include cleanliness, damage, heating, electricity, plumbing and safety. Unannounced health and safety inspections may occur when an infraction of a university guideline is suspected or an emergency situation arises.
Residence Availability
Living on campus is a privilege reserved for full-time traditionally-aged undergraduate day students. On a space available and case-by-case basis, the university may offer housing to part-time, graduate, or non-traditional students.
