This course explores the politics of sustainable development and its impact on development policy, with an emphasis on the implications of models of development based on the Western historical experience for the goal of achieving sustainable development in less developed countries. Students will spend much of the course playing and evaluating their own performance in Strategem, a computer-assisted simulation game developed originally for the U.S. Agency for International Development, in which players assume the roles of government ministers in a less developed country and attempt to chart a course of sustainable development for that country over a period of fifty years. Offered every fall beginning in 2007. Writing intensive.
