MFA in Writing, Low Residency Fiction and Nonfiction

Go Write Your Book

Write the book you've always dreamed of writing as you earn your MFA in Fiction or Nonfiction at Southern New Hampshire University. Our two-year low-residency MFA writing program allows you to write at home, while still maintaining your day-to-day responsibilities. Because we cap our program at 60 students and focus only on narrative prose, students connect with each other and faculty mentors during short, but inspiring residencies, developing close and sustaining relationships that continue well beyond graduation. Students focus on fiction (including adult and young adult) or nonfiction (including environmental writing and memoir). Our vibrant creative writing program guides our students in discovering their unique stories and rhythms as writers, while also teaching them a command of the craft. Students graduate with a book-length manuscript of publishable quality, a network of agents and editors, college-teaching opportunities, and a lifetime writing community.

Our two principal goals:

  • Create a close and vibrant writing community
  • Graduate each student with a publishable book in hand

Low Residency - Inspire the Writer Within

Become part of a writer's colony. Immerse yourself in the writer's life during our summer and winter residencies and craft your story in a northern New England setting steeped in beauty and history. In the summer enjoy your morning coffee with fellow students and faculty on a porch looking out to the White Mountains, and in the winter cozy up with a good book in front of a crackling fire. Meet with best-selling, award-winning authors, participate in workshops and readings, and garner advice from high-placed publishing insiders.

Both annual writing residencies are conducted at the Mountain View Grand Resort in Whitefield, New Hampshire. The residencies provide energy, adventure, and an experience that will nurture your creativity and offer opportunities for quiet reflection, intimacy, and inspiration.

Once you complete the admission process, your MFA writing program at SNHU can begin either during the ten-day campus and mountain resort residency in June, or the five-day January residency held in entirety at the resort. In addition to working with our full-time faculty, you will work with visiting writers of fiction and nonfiction and with our board of advisors from the publishing industry - a board that includes editors, agents, and book marketing professionals of some of the highest esteem. During the rest of the year you will work one-on-one with faculty - full-time MFA faculty committed to every student and their success - through correspondence, online, and via telephone conferences.
