Academic Advising: On Campus (Undergraduate Day)
Academic Advising is an essential element of a student’s collegiate experience; it is one of the few endeavors universal to all college and university students and plays a significant role in their education.
At Southern New Hampshire University, All first-year students in the undergraduate day program are required to enroll in the course SNHU 101- First Year Seminar: Foundations of Critical Thinking.
The instructor for the course serves as the student’s academic advisor for the first year.
After the first year, students are assigned an academic advisor in the school of their selected major. The Academic Advising Office coordinates the assignment of academic advisors after the first-year. Students deciding not to declare a major by the end of the first year are assigned an advisor in the Academic Advising Office. Advising office services are available to all students, and particular attention is given to the Exploratory Studies students. Services include academic counseling, course planning and selection, educational, and career planning.
Our primary objective in the undergraduate day Academic Advising Office is to assist students in the development of meaningful educational and career plans that are compatible with the student’s abilities, interests, and goals.
Advising is a SHARED responsibility. Academic advisors work closely with and assist students to identify and assess the opportunities, challenges, and consequences of their academic and career decisions. Although the advisor’s counsel can have a great value, it is the student who bears the ultimate responsibility for making decisions about their educational plans and completing the necessary requirements for graduation.
