Southern New Hampshire University celebrated its 74th Commencement on Saturday, May 13. The university conferred 974 undergraduate and 746 graduate degrees at the Verizon Wireless Arena.  (A total of 1,578 undergraduate students and 795 graduate students earned their degrees in 2005-2006; not all were present.)

Gov. John Lynch received an honorary Doctor of Laws and shared with graduates lessons he learned as governor, as a businessman and as a softball coach.

“Teamwork makes all the difference,” Lynch said. “As you go out into the world, no matter what you do, remember that organizations are more than just numbers.”

“Failure is not the end of the world. It’s how we learn,” he added.

University President Paul LeBlanc congratulated graduates and noted that they are joining a select group.

“This ceremony reminds us that a college degree remains a very significant achievement unavailable to most of the world’s population,” LeBlanc said.

Graduating Student Government Association President Jared Gabrey said graduates have many more learning opportunities ahead of them and offered some advice.

“These experiences may also lead to many mistakes,” he said. “Do not dwell on these mistakes, but instead learn from them and make the most by laughing at yourself.”

Utiang Ubge, of Nigeria, received his Ph.D. in community economic development.

“My training at SNHU has enabled me to intellectually integrate the local with the global, the practical with the theoretical and the social with the philosophical in the field of community economic development,” he said. (Full speech) (PDF 56 kb)

The winners of the 2005 Excellence in Teaching Awards also were announced at the ceremony. The full-time faculty award went to Helen Packey, associate professor of English, while the community faculty award went to Robert Wheeler, who teaches literature at the university’s Seacoast Center in Portsmouth.
