director of the M.F.A. program, teaches fiction and nonfiction. He has written 20 critical and freelance articles, two books on contemporary novelists, a critical anthology of nature writing and a trilogy of historical novels set in New England. His most recent novel, “Rebecca Wentworth’s Distraction,” won the 2003 Langum Prize for historical fiction. Other novels in the trilogy have been widely reviewed and chosen as Main Selections for the Literary Guild and the Mystery Guild book clubs.
