"Everyone has ideas. CED provides the critical link which translates the idea into achievement."
Dr. Puneetha Palakurthi, adjunct faculty member and senior research associate in Southern New Hampshire University’s Applied Research Center in Community Economic Development, is a firm believer in community-driven development.
Palakurthi, a native of India, acknowledges that microcredit is a great entry point for community economic development. She has seen firsthand its impact, especially on poor women in Asia and Africa. She notes that providing women with the resources to start their own businesses, however small, can change their lives.
“Microcredit has the power to do that,” she says.
Women in developing countries all over the world have no access to resources, control over their destiny and/or respect, she says. She thinks that the three-pronged approach of education, employability and citizen action would help place them in the center of decision-making that affects their lives.
The School of CED, with its emphasis on training, networking, entrepreneurism and support, is a perfect fit.
“Everyone has ideas. CED provides the critical link which translates the idea into achievement,” she says. “That’s what draws me to this work. It has a great potential to transform lives for the better.”
