Carpet One founder and New Hampshire native Howard Brodsky will be the keynote speaker at the Cooperative Development Institute’s Cooperative Enterprise conference Friday, June 15, at Southern New Hampshire University. The event will begin at 8 a.m. in the university’s Hospitality Center.

Experts in the development of group-based businesses, including employee stock-ownership plans, will discuss with the local business community both the potential and the resources for cooperative business development in New Hampshire.

Presenters will include Jim Megson of the Boston-based ICA Group, one of the original consultants to New York’s Cooperative Home Care Associates, with more than 800 worker-owners, and Lois Parris, board chair of one of the 85 resident-owned communities assisted by the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund. Credit unions, which are legally structured as financial service cooperatives, will be represented at the event by Tom Champagne and Ron Rioux of St. Mary's Bank of Manchester, the nation's first credit union.

About the speaker

In 1985 Howard Brodsky, son of a New England carpet store owner, launched Carpet One with 13 member stores. Today there are 700 members of Carpet One, which is one of 12 divisions of CCA Global Partners, an $8 billion-a-year company with more than 3,000 retail outlets and 10,000 stores.  The cooperative business model Brodsky helped develop enables independent retailers to compete successfully with big chains by sharing information and supporting one another's leadership. Brodsky has received many awards for his cooperative enterprise model from the likes of Ernst & Young, NASDAQ, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Entrepreneur Hall of Fame.

St. Mary's is co-sponsoring the event with CDI, SNHU, NHCLF and CCA Global Partners. Other co-sponsors, many of whom will participate in the program, include Hanover Consumers Cooperative food stores, the Cooperative Fund of New England, Cabot Creamery, the New Hampshire Electric Cooperative, USDA Rural Services-VT/NH and NCB (formerly National Co-op Bank).
