The McIninch Art Gallery at Southern New Hampshire University will present “Go Figure! The Figure in Contemporary Art – A Response to Art History,” from Sept. 21 through Oct. 25. A public opening reception will be held Thursday, Sept. 20, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Exhibiting artists will include: Harriet Casdin-Silver, Katherine Doyle, Aaron Fink, Anne Harris, Haley Hasler, Cynthia Packard, Christopher Pothier, Gary Samson, Katy Schneider, Suzanne Vincent, Joe Vivilecchia, Sumner Winebaum and Bert Yarborough.
Loans to the exhibition are the courtesy of Alpha Gallery, Chase Gallery, Gallery NAGA and Nielsen Gallery, all of Boston; McGowan Fine Art, of Concord; and Art 3 Gallery, of Manchester.

The selection of work in this exhibition illustrates the ongoing response to art history that artists endeavor to make while exploring the nuances of representing the human figure. In some cases, the artist is making a direct quote of a painting, such as Aaron Fink’s “Philip IV,” the artist’s response to a Velazquez portrait of the powerful Spanish monarch, or Suzanne Vincent’s response to the Greek image of “Three Graces.” In other cases, the artist may simply be referencing an art historical period, such as Pothier’s figures that are cloaked in shadows and light reminiscent of Flemish painting.

The exhibition is a lesson in perception where the figure is cloaked in a visage of the past, but with a contemporary twist.

The gallery, which was made possible by a generous gift from the McIninch Foundation, is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday evenings from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The gallery is closed on Sundays. All gallery events are free and open to the public.
