Hockey Hosts Northeast-10 Quarterfinal Saturday Night
MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team has earned the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Tournament and will host sixth-seeded Assumption College Saturday, March 1, 2008 at The Ice Den. Faceoff is slated for 7:30 pm. The Penmen took a 5-1 win in their lone meeting with the Greyhounds this season.
SNHU comes into the tournament with an overall mark of 11-12-1 and a 3-2 Northeast-10 record. The Penmen are led by senior Brandon Hammermeister (Calgary, ALB) who has registered 14 goals and 18 assists for 32 points. Sophomore John Frey (Westminster, CO) has recorded 13 goals and 15 assists for 28 points, while classmate Ryan DiBartolomeo (Leominster, MA) has eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points. A pair of freshmen, Troy Maybury (South Portland, ME) and Ed Montgomery (Colchester, VT) have had fine rookie seasons, with Maybury recording seven goals and 11 assists and Montgomery recording seven goals and eight assists. Shane Brooks (Kennebunk, ME) has seen the bulk of time down the stretch in goal for the Penmen and owns a 3.60 goals-against average and .896 save percentage.
Assumption owns a 7-18 overall mark and a 0-5 mark in conference play. The Greyhounds are led by senior Jim Trahon, who has notched nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points. Patrick Fitzgibbons has recorded eight goals and 11 assists, while Luke McDonough has five goals and 12 assists for 17 points. Jamie DiGiulio has seen the bulk of action between the pipes and owns a .872 save percentage and 5.04 goals against average.
2008 marks the fifth year the Northeast-10 has sponsored ice hockey as a conference championship. Southern New Hampshire owns a 5-4 record in NE-10 championship play, reaching the conference championship game in 2005 and 2006.
