Softball Splits With Assumption in Season Finale
WORCESTER, Mass. – Southern New Hampshire University and Assumption College split a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader in the season finale for both schools Wednesday afternoon. The Greyhounds posted a 7-2 win in the opener, while the Penmen won by an identical score in the nightcap.
SNHU wraps up its season 17-22 and 13-15 in the NE-10, while the Greyhounds finish their season 15-25 and 11-17 in the league.
In the nightcap, SNHU would score in five of seven innings and scored two runs apiece in the third and sixth frames. Ashley Bernstein (Stoughton, MA) was 2-4 at the plate for the Penmen with two RBI as she belted a two-run home run in the third, while Ashley Guertin (Manchester, NH) was 3-4 with an RBI. Laurie Boland (Worcester, MA) added a two-run single in the sixth. Elena Anderson (Salem, WI) also added a pair of hits and knocked in a run.
Bernstein notched her eighth victory of the season on the mound, allowing 10 hits but surrendering just two runs in a complete game effort.
In the opener, Assumption broke open a 2-1 game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-1 lead. The Greyhounds took advantage of four hits, a Penmen error and a walk. The hosts took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first before SNHU scored a run in the top of the fifth when a triple by Karissa Bettencourt (Norton, MA) scored Michelle Maranto (East Hampstead, NH). The other Penmen run came in the sixth when Bernstein led off with a single and scored on a double by Anderson.
Bettencourt had three hits for SNHU in the opener while Anderson finished with two hits. Mary Bradford (Big Bear, CA) took the loss for Southern New Hampshire.
