University Expectations

Southern New Hampshire University provides an environment that supports both intellectual and personal growth. This requires striking a balance between upholding individual freedom and demanding respect for the rights of others. Each student has the right to a climate conducive to study, and other students must respect this right.

As young adults, students also have new, or recent, freedoms and privileges. The university should not, therefore, be constantly watching their actions or judging their behavior. When a student’s actions clash with the rights of others to a safe environment, however, the university must follow up.

Students are, therefore, held to a high standard of conduct - one that will maintain the educational quality of the campus. If a student is responsible for violations of university regulations, staff members will work with him/her in ways that promote social and personal development.

Students are advised that they are responsible for their own conduct as well as that of their on campus guests. If charged with a violation of federal, state or local laws, whether the violation occurred on or off-campus, or if their actions off-campus violate behavioral expectations outlined in the student handbook, they may be subject to disciplinary action within the university system. The administrators of each department are responsible for enforcing both university and departmental rules and regulations in their areas.

While it is impossible to list all expectations, the university expects that students will

  • Treat others politely and with respect without regard to race, ethnic origin, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation or disability
  • Preserve the quiet and atmosphere necessary for academic work
  • Refrain from alcohol and other drug abuse
  • Respect and follow university guidelines and procedures regarding its living and learning mission.
