Kraus, Parent Selected to ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Team
MANCHESTER, N.H. – Juniors Julie Kraus (Derry, NH) and Libby Parent (Hinesburg, VT) of the Southern New Hampshire University women’s lacrosse team were both named to the ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Women’s At-Large All-District College Division First Team. The pair, who were the only two student-athletes to be named to the First Team from a Division II institution, are now both eligible for Academic All-America honors.
CoSIDA selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs, including the Women’s At-Large program. Student-athletes from 13 women’s sports are eligible: bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo. The College Division consists of NCAA Division II and III institutions as well as NAIA institutions.
Kraus is a Business Administration major with concentrations in small business management and human resource management who is also minoring in Marketing. Through her first three years at SNHU she has maintained a 3.99 grade-point average. She was named the University’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in each of the past two years and is also a two-time selection to the Northeast-10 All-Academic Team. On the field, Kraus was recently named IWLCA First Team All-Region. In 2008, she was a First Team Northeast-10 All-Conference selection, as well as the NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year, anchoring a Penmen defense that ranked second in the Northeast-10, allowing 12.72 goals per game. She led the Penmen in ground balls (62), draw controls (56) and caused turnovers (30) while ranking fourth in the NE-10 in ground balls and first in the league for draw controls. Nationally, Kraus ranked in the top 20 in Division II in all three categories as well as well as helping SNHU be the national leader in draw controls per game. One of three players to start all 18 games for SNHU, Kraus registered 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points.
Parent is a Marketing major who is carrying a double minor in Communications and Public Relations. She has compiled a 3.94 GPA and is also a two-time Northeast-10 All-Academic Team member. This season, Parent garnered IWLCA Second Team All-Region honors and was also an NE-10 First Team selection. She led SNHU in scoring, registering 48 goals and 28 assists for 76 points this season. In the process, she set a single-season school record for points in a season. She recorded at least one goal in all 18 games this season and failed to score multiple goals in a game just four times, notching a season-high five goals apiece in games against Bates and Bryant. During the season, she became SNHU’s all-time leading scorer and has registered 125 goals and 60 assists for 185 points over her first three seasons, while scoring at least one goal in each of her last 32 games and in 44 of 45 career contests.
Southern New Hampshire finished the 2008 season with a school-record 12 victories as it posted a 12-6 record and advanced to the Northeast-10 championship game for the first time in program history. The Penmen were ranked 10th in the final IWLCA poll.
