Assistant Professor Cathy Stavenger, of Manchester, and adjunct instructor Kathy Willis, of Hooksett, were honored this year with Southern New Hampshire University’s Excellence in Teaching Award.

Stavenger, who received the full-time faculty award, is the coordinator of teacher certification and student teaching. She also serves as a consultant, providing professional development opportunities in the areas of math and differentiated instruction for local schools. Prior to coming to SNHU, she taught in the Bedford School District and was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching and served as a Distinguished Educator for the NH Department of Education. She is a member of the NH Excellence in Education Awards board and the executive board of NH Teachers of Mathematics. She is a graduate of Merrimack High School and the University of New Hampshire.

Willis, who received the community faculty award, has been teaching math at the university since 1998. She also teaches statistics courses and has been with the university’s Learning Center, which provides academic support to undergraduate day students, full-time since 2005. Previously she taught math at New Hampshire Community Technical College in Manchester.

SNHU’s annual teaching excellence awards recognize two faculty members who exemplify those qualities that set the university apart as a teaching institution: effectiveness as a classroom teacher, commitment to students through advising and tutoring, professional development, contributions toward building the reputation or image of the university, impact on graduates as viewed by alumni and a general attitude toward students that demonstrates concern for their welfare.
