PORTSMOUTH — With more than 80 submissions to choose from, Pro Portsmouth decided on a Market Square Day logo that, like the event itself, is a little green.
The submission by Hampton resident Christine Gorayeb, a 22-year-old graphic design student at Southern New Hampshire University, captured the spirit of the 31st Market Square Day, according to Pro Portsmouth president Barbara Massar. It will be the first "green" Pro Portsmouth event — where every trashcan will be accompanied by a recycling bin.>
"We thought she really kept with our theme of being more green," said Massar. "It's amazing the number of people who submit logos. The decision was very hard."
The logo features a lone tree in front of a purple city backdrop with the sun peaking over the tree.
"The history and culture of Portsmouth gives off this simple and organic kind of vibe," said Gorayeb. "So I put that together and this is what I came up with."
The logo will appear on all Market Square Day merchandise including T-shirts for volunteers, the 10K road race, and those for sale.
Roughly 80,000 people are expected to come to Portsmouth for Market Square Day next Saturday, June 14. Market Square roadways will be shut down beginning at 4 a.m. that morning.
Parking restrictions will be enforced and vehicles will be towed at the owner's expense. The High-Hanover garage offers a flat rate of $5 from the hours of 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., and $3 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. A free shuttle service will also be provided, running from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Massar said there are already 1,200 people signed up for the 10K race, and they will need to cap it at 1,700 for safety purposes.
The event will include approximately 160 booths, featuring local crafters, businesses and food vendors.
Go & do
Market Square Day will begin with a historic walk at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 13, in front of North Church, and festivities continue through Saturday evening. Parking restrictions begin downtown at 4 a.m. on Saturday, June 14. A free shuttle will be provided from the overflow lot at the Fox Run Mall.
