Who Can Borrow Library Material?

SNHU Community
Circulating library materials may be borrowed by any member of the SNHU community. Faculty, staff  and current students will first need to register at the library circulation desk with their SNHU ID. Alumni
Southern New Hampshire University alumni may borrow books and audio books at Shapiro Library using their SNHU Alumni Association ID card.  Just bring your Alumni card with you to the Library for activation and a barcode number. Alumni cards can be obtained from the Alumni Office. SNHU Alumni are welcome to use the Library's electronic resources (with minor exceptions) in person at Shapiro Library. Regretfully, due to licensing restrictions imposed by publishers, alumni privileges cannot be extended to remote access to the electronic resources. Consortia Members
Patrons from libraries participating in the NHCUC or GMILCS consortia may borrow material from Shapiro Library subject to some restrictions (PDF 29 kb). For more information, contact the circulation desk staff at 603.645.9605 or circulation@snhu.edu.

Others
Those who otherwise do not qualify to borrow Shapiro Library material may apply for a special borrower card. The card carries a $50.00 annual fee and borrowers are subject to some restrictions (PDF 29 kb). For more information, contact the circulation desk staff at 603.645.9605 or circulation@snhu.edu.

What Can I Borrow?

Books & Audio Books
For most patrons Shapiro Library books, government documents and books on CD may be checked out for three weeks at a time and may be renewed up to five times. SNHU faculty and doctoral students may borrow material for up to one semester at a time. Reference books, periodicals and microform material must be used in the library. Course Reserve Materials
Reserve materials (some textbooks, current newspapers, and faculty assigned readings) are kept at the circulation desk and may be used in the library upon presentation of a valid SNHU ID. Faculty members wanting to place course material on reserve should review the Course Reserve Policy and complete a Reserves Request form (pdf 50.0 KB). Reserve questions should be directed to Barbara Widger 603.668.2211, ext. 2157.

Laptops
Shapiro Library has laptops available for loan within Shapiro Library to current SNHU students, faculty and staff. Laptops can be checked out for up to four hours at a time. (see Laptop policies [Word Doc 30.5 kb] for more information..)

Calculators
Graphing calculators are available for loan within Shapiro Library to current Southern New Hampshire University students, faculty and staff. Calculators can be checked out for up to four hours at a time. For more information, contact the circulation desk staff at 603.645.9605 or circulation@snhu.edu.

eBook Readers
Sony eBook readers are available for loan at the library circulation desk. You may select an eBook from the list of classics at the Sony eBookstore. We will load the book on to the reader and loan it just like a regular book. For more information, please contact Chris Cooper 603.668.2211, ext. 2160.

Videogames
Videogames for the Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony Play Station 3, Nintendo Wii, Sony PSP and Nintendo DS are available for loan to current SNHU students, faculty and staff. The library also has an Xbox 360 available for loan. Games and the console  may be checked out for up to 1 week. Check the Online Library Catalog for a list of available games. How do I Borrow Material Not Available at SNHU?

Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary Loan provides current SNHU students, faculty and staff with access to material not held at Shapiro Library. To place a request, fill out the Interlibrary Loan Form  with your contact information and a complete citation for the items you are requesting. Most requests are filled within 3-5 business days. Before placing a request for materials from another library, please check the Shapiro Library Catalog or Electronic & Print Journals by Title to be sure that the Shapiro Library does not own the material that you are requesting. GMILCS
Shapiro Library is a member of the GMILCS consortium. Through this membership, SNHU students, faculty and staff may borrow materials from many Manchester area libraries. SNHU community members may also request items from other GMILCS libraries through the GMILCS catalog using your SNHU ID card barcode and PIN number (1234 unless you have had it changed). NHCUC
Shapiro Library is also a member of the NHCUC consortium.  This membership grants SNHU students, faculty and staff library privileges in person at a variety of New Hampshire college and university libraries. How Do I Renew Material?
Online
You may renew Shapiro Library material online. Log in using your SNHU ID card barcode and your PIN number (1234 unless you have had it changed).

By Phone
You may renew Shapiro Library material by contacting the Library Circulation Desk at 603.645.9605.  

In Person
You may renew Shapiro Library material in person at the Shapiro Library Circulation Desk. You do not need to bring materials into the library to renew them.

What Are the Overdue Fines?

Circulation Collection
When a book is more than three weeks overdue it is considered lost and a non-refundable processing fee of $15 is charged in addition to a replacement charge of at least $50. Sony eBook readers are billed at the same rate as other circulating books.

Reserve Materials
Late reserve are billed at a rate of $1 an hour/$10 a day. Additional fees and/or replacement costs may also apply. Calculators and Videogames are billed as reserve items.

Laptops, floppy drives, and network cards
Late laptop computers and related items are billed at $2 an hour/$20 a day late fine in addition to replacement or repair fees. Replacement fee for a laptop will be at least $3000.
