Winslow Homer, Dad’s Coming (wood engraving, 1873), collection of Dr. and Mrs. James Grace
These images by one of America’s foremost artists shed light on the Civil War and on daily life in the mid-nineteenth century. They present scenes, themes and techniques that Homer would use in some of his most important paintings. Printed in popular magazines of the day, they were the common person’s art gallery. Dr. Grace is a retired SNHU professor of Business Law.
