Matthew Delaney’s American academic adventure began with a phone call and a question: Would he like to attend a university in the United States and play soccer on scholarship?
“I was all for it. I had never been to America,” says the native of Wallasey, England, who has been playing soccer since the age of 5.
Matthew is captain of SNHU’s soccer team, which qualified for the NCAA tournament in 2006. That role has given him a lot of responsibility and taught him all about teamwork and competitiveness.
“The adoration you get when you score goals isn’t bad either,” he adds.
Even though he plays a defensive position, Matthew led the team with five goals during the 2007-2008 season.
Matthew is working on a bachelor’s degree in business studies with a concentration in sport management.
“I’ll have more opportunities with a business degree. The university has an excellent reputation in both fields,” says Matthew, who describes himself as a very confident person with a “never-say-die” attitude.
SNHU attracts many international students.
“America is still the land of opportunity and this school holds itself very high academically. There are many positive reasons for studying here,” says Matthew, who maintains a 3.83 GPA. “Learning from the professors how to build relationships and have a good rapport with others is one of the ways that SNHU is preparing me to be a success. Coming here was the best decision I’ve ever made.”
