SNHU Author/Professor Wins Lupine Award

Manchester, N.H. (May 11, 2009) -- Diane Les Becquets, Southern New Hampshire University’s director of creative writing and assistant director of the Master of Fine Arts in fiction and nonfiction, was recently honored with the 2008 Lupine Award for her novel “Season of Ice.”

“Season of Ice” was chosen for the Lupine Juvenile/Youth Author Award. Les Becquets received the award at the annual Reading Round-Up of Children’s and Young Adult Literature Conference in April, which is sponsored by the Maine Regional Library System and the Maine Library Association's Youth Services Section.

In accepting the award, Les Becquets spoke to a crowd of close to 400 about the changing times in our country. She said that with any change, there is loss and some form of grief, yet she also spoke of the opportunity for new life and the hope that change can bring to our lives.

“It was my intention to capture that hope in my novel, as well as to bring readers to a close and healing intimacy with the natural environment,” she said.  “I am grateful to the Maine Library Association for its thoughtful read of my novel and am honored to receive the award. The state of Maine has long been recognized as a state rich in literary culture as well as rich in natural beauty. One of the greatest enjoyments of writing ‘Season of Ice’ was capturing with words the natural landscape of northern Maine and the life of its people.”

The Lupine Award was inspired by Maine author and illustrator Barbara Cooney. It is presented annually by the Maine Library Association's Youth Services Section to honor outstanding contributions to children's literature of Maine. Living authors or illustrators who reside in Maine or whose work has a Maine focus are considered for the award. “Seasons of Ice” takes place in Maine.
