Dr. Robert Craven, professor of English and humanities, received Southern New Hampshire University’s 2009 Excellence in Teaching Award.

“You can tell that he loves to teach and you can also tell the incredible amount of knowledge he holds,” said one student in nominating Craven.

Craven has taught English, arts and humanities courses at SNHU since 1977. He previously won the Excellence in Teaching Award in 1991. He wrote the original proposal to introduce liberal arts majors at the university in 1991 and is the former chair of the Arts and Humanities Department. He is the founder and former director of the McIninch Art Gallery at SNHU and has published five books and more than 100 articles. He is retiring from the university this year and has been named professor emeritus.

“Looking back after 40-some years, I am glad I became a teacher – a professor of my subjects – and I am glad I spent 30-plus of those years at SNHU,” Craven said in his teaching philosophy statement. “In order to stimulate students, I must be a continuing student myself. If I don’t enjoy and succeed at learning, how can I expect my students to do so? I teach subjects that I genuinely love.”

SNHU’s annual teaching excellence awards recognize one full-time faculty member and two adjunct faculty members who exemplify those qualities that set the university apart as a teaching institution: effectiveness as a classroom teacher, commitment to students through advising and tutoring, professional development, contributions toward building the reputation or image of the university, impact on graduates as viewed by alumni and a general attitude toward students that demonstrates concern for their welfare.
