Academic Advising information for Advisors

Academic advising is a developmental process in which an advisor assists students to identify, develop, and clarify an educational plan and career and life goals consistent with their (the students’) abilities, interests, skills, and values. Advisors are encouraged to participate in professional development workshops.

The Goals of Academic Advising

National Academic Advising Association (NACADA)
The Academic Advising Office encourages all undergraduate day advisors to consider joining NACADA, become familiar with and utilize the association’s network and resources for continuous professional development and improvement of advising practices and adopt the spirit and intention of their Statement of Core Values.

Program Planning Sheets
When meeting with your advisees, make sure you have the most recent copy of their program planning sheet. Copies of  program planning sheets can be obtained from the Registrar's Office. Note: Should students decide to change their majors, they are subject to the requirements of the current year program planning sheet. It is important to review any change in program requirements with students before they make a decision to change their major.
