Stan Spirou Inducted into Basketball Hall of Fame

Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball coach Stan Spirou has been selected to be inducted into the sixth class of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, it was announced by The Institute for International Sport, the Hall's host, recently.  Spirou will be inducted in a ceremony to be held at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.

Spirou, who enters his 25th season on the Penmen bench as head coach in 2009-10, has established himself as one of the premier coaches in all of Division II.  In 24 years he has amassed a 484-235 (.673) record, led Southern New Hampshire to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, and registered 14 20-win seasons.

Spirou led the Penmen to the NCAA Division II semifinals in 1993 and 1994, then guided SNHU to another "Elite Eight" berth in 1995.  Over that span the Penmen were 84-15 and captured three straight New England Collegiate Conference tournament titles.  A four-time NECC Coach of the Year, Spirou has averaged 20.2 wins per season and was named the Division II Bulletin National Coach of the Year in 1994.  He currently ranks second among active Northeast-10 coaches with 484 wins.
