Christopher Calo envisions himself using video games for education.
Last summer, Chris and several fellow game design and development majors began creating a video-game simulation to train SNHU students who help local taxpayers prepare their annual returns.
“I have a passion for helping people learn,” says Chris, of Manchester, N.H. “I’m thinking I might end up becoming a professor, but I’m hesitant to pick a specific field, because I have a passion for so many different things.”
Chris combines his gaming studies with a second major, information technology. While other schools’ game-design curricula emphasize programming, SNHU’s major is comprehensive, taking students through planning, design and implementation stages, he says.
There are five concentrations within the major, allowing students to focus on the creative, technical or business aspects of game design. Chris chose the technical track.
In one class, Chris and classmates created a game-design studio for the university, dubbed the Dragon’s Lair. When he’s not designing games, he works in SNHU’s Learning Center as a math and IT tutor. He’s also a teaching assistant for statistics classes and an IT lab assistant.
“I’ve had so many opportunities here,” he said. “The school has helped me realize my potential. I’m flattered that I can use my potential to make the school a better place.”
