When she enrolled as an SNHU online psychology major, Kathleen Richardson didn’t have a clear goal in mind.
But that didn’t matter.
Divorced and working full time, the Smithfield, R.I. resident was confident that she had made a wise decision.
“Education is an investment in your future, an investment in yourself,” she says. “No matter what, you always have your education.”
In the beginning, Kathy carried her laptop everywhere. She was always stopping to do a bit of homework, even during a vacation at Disney World.
After the laptop broke, however, she adjusted to studying at the public library.
“I’d be half dead in front of the computer, asking myself, ‘Can I do this?’ But once I got online, I learned so much,” she says.
Kathy says her professors were “very warm, very giving, and very supportive.”
She says she shared what she learned.
“As a psychology major, you learn that to empower other people is huge,” Kathy says. “It’s important for them to know they can achieve.”
For Kathy, a senior research project in forensic psychology was the spark that ignited a passion, and her decision to pursue a graduate degree and career in the field.
“My online class led me to a career I didn’t even know was possible,” she says.
