Before, During & After a Job Fair

Prepare for the November 10th SNHU Career & Internship Expo by reviewing the tips below.

Before the fair:

  • Know the employers. Prepare questions catered to that company and print out the positions that you are interested in to help you at the fair.
  • Polish your resume. Be sure your resume reflects your knowledge and skills! Use our resume tips to help, or make an appointment with a CDC staff member to review your resume by calling 603.645.9630. Do not forget to print out multiple copies of your resume on resume paper.
  • Prepare to “sell” yourself. Practice answering questions about you, your interest in the company, what you are looking for and what you can offer an employer.
  • Network with alumni via LinkedIn. This will allow you to gain inside information on the types of employees that company likes to hire, as well as build your personal network.
  • Attend career workshops. You will be able to have your resume reviewed, gain company information, learn how to dress and more.

During the fair:

  • Dress and act for success. Employers will be watching you the moment you enter the fair, so make sure to look and act like you already are part of the business world! Dressing appropriately for a career fair will help you present yourself as a professional.
  • Be confident and proactive. Take the initiative to introduce yourself to employers and tell them why you are interested in their companies (remember – you did the research!). Smile as you greet them.
  • Travel alone. Walking around in a group will not allow you to stand out.
  • Be confident in you, your resume and your abilities. If you need help with interviewing, please use our interviewing tips or visit us in Exeter 59 to make an appointment.
  • Be attentive and ask questions. Make sure to listen to the employer. They will speak about the company or themselves, and then you will have the chance to relate your skills and qualifications to what they said. Remember to ask questions as well – it will show that you have done research!
  • Gather business cards. Collect a business card from every employer with whom you speak, and write what you discussed with them after you leave their table on the back of the card.

After the fair:

  • Follow-up. Write a hand-written, personal note to each employer with whom you spoke. The ones in which you are interested, write about something specific you discussed. Use the CDC resources of letter writing if you need help.
  • Evaluate the day. Decide what did and what did not work. This will show what you need to develop in order to be more successful at future career and internship fairs.
