Nathan Yates is getting more than a college degree through SNHU Online. He’s obtained something he’s never had before – classmates.
“It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” Nathan says.
A finance/economics major, Nathan lives in Clintwood, Va., a coal mining town in Appalachia.
Two years ago, when he enrolled at Southern New Hampshire University, he had never taken an online course, nor had he ever attended school with classmates. Because Nathan has muscular dystrophy and is susceptible to respiratory infections, he and his parents decided he would study with tutors, starting in kindergarten, rather than attend school.
Now the 20-year-old student is meeting dozens of classmates every term and staying in touch with many of them.
“The student body is exceptionally diverse,” he says. “I have the opportunity to interact with working adults, active-duty service members, traditional SNHU day students and people living all over the globe. How else could all of these folks study together in the same class?”
Nathan has a similar appreciation for his professors, describing them as knowledgeable and caring.
“My professors have great experience, both in teaching and in the business world,” he says. “Learners are given tools, skills and critical thinking exercises that enable them to improve their lives, as well as the lives of their families.”
