Advertising student Shabaz Hussain already is gaining experience and making a name for himself in his field.
Seeking to increase career resources for SNHU advertising students, Shabaz launched AdGroup, an on-campus chapter of the American Advertising Federation, the nation’s oldest advertising trade association. He recruited more than 30 members.
Shabaz traveled to St. Louis for the 2009 AAF Student Conference, where he was encouraged to apply for the AAF’s 2010 Most Promising Minority Students Program. He was one of 50 students chosen as a finalist in the national program, which allows college seniors to showcase their abilities while encouraging diversity in the advertising industry.
“I was jumping for joy, because I know how much it helps careers,” Shabaz says.
An influential teacher at Lindenhurst High School in his hometown of Lindenhurst, N.Y., fostered Shabaz’s interest in advertising. In his SNHU classes, he has worked on campaigns for such local organizations as the City of Manchester Parks, Recreation & Cemetery Department, Manchester Regional Youth Hockey Association and Southern New Hampshire Services, a nonprofit serving Hillsborough County.
“You work with real-life clients, and that really helps,” Shabaz says.
Upon graduation, he aspires to Madison Avenue heights.
“I’d like to be in account management in a big agency in New York City, if everything works out,” he says.
