The Bachelor of Arts in Music Education program is based on the idea that the best way to prepare students to become great music teachers is to constantly place them in actual teaching settings along-side outstanding veteran music educators.  The core of the program is a six semester field work based course sequence taught by David Bresnahan, a thirty five year veteran of the NH public schools.  Students will have at least one teaching experience and one related music education lecture each week.  This six semester sequence will cover as wide a variety of music teaching situations as possible.  SNHU has established partnerships with a variety of local school districts and outside music organizations that will allow for these constant hands on experiences.

The SNHU Music Education program is based on a cohort model in which only a small number of students are accepted into the program each year.  This group of students will take all music and music education courses together as a group.  This system results in a low student/teacher ratio, provides significant personal attention for each student, and creates a close, nurturing atmosphere among the students in each cohort.

Southern New Hampshire University Music Education Philosophy Statement:

The SNHU B.A. in Music Education provides students with the necessary skills for a lifetime of continued learning and scholarship in music and other academic domains.  Our faculty strive to develop the knowledge and skills students will need to engage with and navigate the challenges of a global society.

The faculty believe that in order to become an effective music teacher one must become an excellent musician. Our music education program is based upon the idea that involving frequent student interaction with outstanding veteran educators, encompassing a variety of learning environments throughout the undergraduate preparation is the best way to prepare for a successful career in music education.

The SNHU Music Education program is structured in small student cohorts resulting in low student teacher ratio, significant personal attention for each student, and a close, nurturing atmosphere.  It is small enough to give you the personal attention you want, but still offers major ensembles and other opportunities you would expect to find in a much larger program.  Our faculty aim to provide all students with the skills needed to achieve employment in the field of music education upon graduation.
