Internship Questions for Students
Undergraduate internship integrates classroom study with related on-the-job work experience. At Southern New Hampshire University, an internship is available in virtually all undergraduate programs, offering students the opportunity to gain exposure to their career fields while earning credits toward their degrees. Students may be paid for their work experience.

Graduate internships are for full-time graduate students who have completed 3 consecutive terms and have 18 credits completed.  They integrate classroom study with related on-the-job work experience.  This opportunity allows the student to gain exposure to their career fields while earning credits toward their degrees.  Students may be paid for their work experience.

Why should any student participate in Internship?
There are many reasons why students should! Here are a few:

  • To apply classroom knowledge to the actual employment situation.
  • To gain confidence for future employment.
  • To test career choices early and realistically.
  • To gain an understanding of human relations in the workplace.
  • To earn money, where possible, toward college expenses.
  • To earn credit toward a degree.
  • To develop skills in job search techniques, such as resume writing and interviewing skills.
  • To enhance their resumes with professional employment experience.
  • To obtain employment references or recommendations.
  • To improve after-graduation job prospects through added work experience.

UNDERGRADUATE INTERNSHIP QUESTIONS

How does a student apply?
There is a formal application process for students to follow. Applications are available online (see link above) or by meeting with a CDC counselor.  Meeting with your advisor for credit approval is advised prior to scheduling a meeting with a career counselor.

What are the placement periods and how long do they last?
There are three placement periods: September - December, January - mid-May, and Mid-May - August.  Application process and job search begin as early as six months prior to the beginning of the internship.

Who is eligible?

Students with a minimum of 60 credits and in good academic standing, are eligible to apply for internship. (Culinary Arts and Fashion Merchandising majors require fewer credits.)

How many credits are earned?
The number of credits that a student may apply for vary from three (3) to twelve (12), depending on the student's major. There is a faculty-developed syllabus for each major which the student follows during their work experience.

How do students find their Internship placements?
Students bear much of the responsibility for finding quality placements!
When beginning the process, students need to schedule an appointment with a CDC counselor to:

  • discuss a search strategy, which includes decisions on kind of work and geographic location;
  • create a competitive resume and letter of intent;
  • practice interview skills;
  • research and identify potential employers.

The Career Development Center provides access to placement listings through SNHU Recruit (profile activation required).

How are students graded ?
Students receive a pass/fail grade based on evaluation by their employer and on successful completion of all assignments as required by their major's syllabus.
