Course Reserve Policy
In order to place items on reserve, faculty members need to complete and submit a Reserve Request Form. Forms can also be picked up at the Circulation Desk. Incomplete or illegible forms will delay processing. Forms will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis and should be submitted at least two weeks before students will need access to the material.
In order to expedite your request, faculty members should bring all items to be placed on Reserve to the Circulation Desk along with the completed Reserve Request Form. However, if you are unable to find a book that the library owns, the library staff will help you locate it. If you would like to request that the library purchase a book needed for Reserve, please contact your school’s library liaison or Chris Cooper (603-668-2211 ext. 2160). Please note that it can take between four and eight weeks to complete book orders, so please plan accordingly.
Reserve staff are available Monday - Friday. Materials will not be processed on weekends or weeknights.
Materials will be taken off reserve at the end of the semester unless an earlier date is specified by the instructor.
What May be Placed on Reserve:
- Circulating books owned by the Library
- Books owned by the faculty member or department, including text books
- Photocopies that comply with U.S. Copyright Law
What May not be Placed on Course Reserve:
- Reference books
- Material borrowed through Interlibrary Loan
- Photocopies that do not comply with U.S. Copyright Law
Please note that material produced by current or former SNHU students must include a permission release signed by the author(s) before it can be placed on reserve.
Professor Copies
Faculty are encouraged to lend personal copies of required course texts to the library for reserve use. These items will have brief records added to the library catalog and will have minimal physical processing, including the additions of a library barcode. These books will be returned to faculty members at the end of the semester, unless otherwise specified. The library cannot take responsibility for damage occurring to these books in the normal course of their use.
Photocopies
The Instructor placing the material on reserve is responsible for complying with U.S. Copyright Law and for obtaining any necessary permission to duplicate material.
Each copy must include complete bibliographic and copyright information, preferably copied from the original source. Photocopies without this information will not be placed on reserve.
Shapiro Library will place on reserve:
- An article from a periodical or newspaper
- A chapter from a book (unless the library owns the book, in which case, we will put the book on reserve)
Copies of Book Chapters
One chapter from a book may be placed on reserve in any one semester. If Shapiro Library owns the book, the book, not copies, will be placed on reserve. If Shapiro Library does not own the book, we will attempt to purchase it in most cases.
Uses of Photocopied Material Requiring Permission
- Repetitive copying: The reserve use of photocopied materials in multiple courses or successive semesters will normally require advance permission from the owner of the copyright, 17 U.S.C. SS107(3).
- Consumable works: The duplication of works that are consumed in the classroom, such as standardized tests, exercises, and workbooks, normally requires permission from the copyright owner, 17 U.S.C. SS107(4).
- Creation of anthologies as basic text material for a course: Creation of a collective work or anthology by photocopying a number of copyrighted articles and excerpts to be purchased and used together as the basic text for a course will in most instances require the permission of the copyrighted owners, 17 U.S.C. SS107(4).
Material placed on reserve that does not comply with fair use should be accompanied by a copy of the appropriate response letter from the copyright holder. The faculty member is responsible for complying with copyright law and obtaining permissions if necessary.
Coursepacks/Readers
Reserve readings may not contain material collated from more than one copyrighted source without the written permission of each copyright holder.
Loan Periods
Faculty may specify any of the following loan periods for reserve material:
- Two hours (in-library use)
- Overnight
- Three days
- One week
Reserves must be returned before closing on the date due. Holds may not be placed on reserve material.
Fines
Students are charged fines for late reserves at the rate of $1.00 per hour and $10.00 per day. Additional fees and book replacement costs may also apply.
