SNHU Online Military FAQs

Can I start my degree program at any time?
Yes, you may start your degree program at any time, as long as you have completed our online application form and registered for a course.SNHU Online offers six, eight-week terms for undergraduate students and four, 11- week terms for graduate students.

Will I be assigned an advisor, and will I be able to communicate with that person on a regular basis?
Shortly after completing the online application you will be contacted by a member of the military support team. At that time you will be provided with contact information for all members of the military support team who are available via phone and e-mail Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. EST.

Can I transfer credits in from other institutions?
Southern New Hampshire University recognizes most courses completed at other accredited colleges and universities, including Regents credits, DANTES, CLEP, ACE certified and military credits. The military advisor will complete a preliminary transfer credit evaluation by reviewing your transcripts from other colleges and universities, or your SMART or ARTS transcript. Commonly offered courses are routinely accepted. The Registrar's Office conducts the final transfer credit evaluation. Courses of an unusual nature may be sent to academic department program coordinators for transfer credit determination.For international institutions, transcripts are evaluated by advisors from the University Center for International Exchange.

Are there any residency requirements for SNHU Online?
Residency requirements can be defined in two ways:

• the number of courses that are required to be taken a school: a minimum of 30 credits must be taken at Southern New Hampshire University for all undergraduate degree programs. A maximum of six credits can be transferred in from an accredited intuition while the remaining credits (may vary depending on graduate degree) are required to be taken at Southern New Hampshire University.*All of the above residency requirements can be fulfilled by SNHU Online.
• the attendance at a physical campus: SNHU Online does not have any such residency requirements and a degree can be completed entirely online without ever visiting a physical campus.

What is the delivery format for SNHU Online courses?
Online courses are delivered through the Blackboard Learning System™, one of the most prevalent teaching and learning environments. Instructors and students interact with one another, share resources and exchange documents through discussion boards and other electronic tools. Students must meet individual instructor requirements for interaction and submit papers, projects, quizzes or examinations by published deadlines. Requirements are outlined in each class syllabus.

You can login to class at your convenience 24 hours a day, seven days per week. There are no mandatory scheduled class hours, allowing you the flexibility and convenience uncharacteristic of the traditional classroom.

What type of technology do I need to study online?
You must have access to a computer and the internet. For technical requirements, click here

Can I continue my degree while at sea?
You can complete your degree anytime, anywhere, as long as you have access to a computer and the internet.Internet access and availability can vary depending on communication infrastructure while at sea.

Do you offer placement tests?
Yes, we offer free online placement tests for English and math.

Do you offer study guides for the courses offered?
Textbooks and other ancillary materials are available for all courses.Textbooks can be purchased online through the SNHU Campus Store

Do you offer credits from testing programs such as CLEP?
Southern New Hampshire University accepts college credit to be transferred through testing programs administered outside the university. These testing programs include:

• College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
• Excelsior (formerly Regents College Proficiency Examinations)
• Defense Activities for Non-Traditional Educational Support (DANTES)
• Local examinations or waivers of degree requirements – You may petition to the appropriate department coordinator for a waiver from uncommon qualifications.
• Portfolio credit – If you are a regularly enrolled student, you may apply for portfolio credit to replace most required courses, up to a maximum of 15 credits. Student guides are available if you are interested in pursuing this option.

What is the maximum number of courses I can take per semester?
You are permitted to take up to two courses (six credit hours) per semester.For those students who maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher, up to three courses (nine credit hours) are permitted per semester; however, this decision should be made in consultation with an Education Service Officer and your Academic Advisor.

Southern New Hampshire University works in conjunction with the Department of Veteran's Affairs in certifying appropriate documents for the following educational assistance programs:

• Montgomery GI bill (MGIB) Chapter 30
• Montgomery GI bill- Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) Chapter 1606
• Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP) Chapter 32
• Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program (DEA) Chapter 35
