Students Raise Money for Maine Camp

A group of students at Southern New Hampshire University is working to raise money for Camp Sunshine, a retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

A benefit dinner will be held Friday, March 9, 2007, in the university’s Hospitality Center. It will begin with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m., followed by a silent auction of goods/services from local businesses. A dinner prepared by Southern New Hampshire University culinary students and Chef Perrin Long, the program chair, will be served at 7 p.m. The cost of the dinner is $50 per person, or you can purchase a table of ten for $475.

Camp Sunshine, based in Casco, Maine, is one of the only programs in the nation that focuses on every member of an ill child’s family. The free camp serves children with cancer, kidney disease, lupus, organ transplants and other illnesses. More than 17,000 children and their families from around the world have visited the weeklong camp.

Students already raised $7,500, enough to sponsor five families, during a student auction held in November. 

“We are hoping that the huge success of that event is just a preview for the support from the community we will receive for the formal dinner in March,” said Brad Lichtman, the event organizer.
