Men's Basketball Rallies Past Southern Connecticut 75-65
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sam Carey (Manchester, NH) totaled 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 75-65 Northeast-10 men’s basketball victory over Southern Connecticut State University at Moore Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon. The Penmen snapped a two-game slide with the victory and improved to10-9 overall and 7-7 in the Northeast-10. The Owls are now 6-13 and 2-12 in the league.
Carey finished 6-9 from the floor and also dished out a career-best five assists. Troy Bowen (Nashua, NH) led Southern New Hampshire with 21 points, going 7-14 from the floor, while Cory Vejraska (Alachua, FL) added nine points.
Derrick Corbett led Southern Connecticut with 15 points.
Southern Connecticut led 42-39 at halftime and extended its lead to 58-48 with 9:37 to play on a pair of Devon Sullivan free throws. SNHU then went on a 12-1 run and a Vejraska basket with just under six minutes to play gave the Penmen a 60-59 lead. The Owls would regain the lead on their next possession with a Terron Jones layup, but SNHU countered with a Carey basket at 5:08 to make it 62-61.
Jones would make 1-of-2 free throws on SCSU’s next possession to knot the game at 62, but the Penmen would take the lead for good with 3:14 to play on a layup by Carey. Southern New Hampshire outscored the hosts 13-3 the rest of the way with the Penmen sealing the victory by going 11-12 at the line over the final 2:42.
The guests used a 6-0 spurt midway through the first half to take a 26-19 lead on a conventional three-point play by Carey at the 8:52 mark. SNHU took its largest lead of the first half, 30-22, with 5:50 before intermission on a Kelly Coder (Exeter, NH) basket. The Penmen held a 33-25 lead before the Owls closed the half on a 17-6 run to take a 42-39 lead into the locker room.
SNHU shot 50% for the contest after shooting 61.5% in the first half. The Penmen were 23-27 (85.2%) at the free throw line. Southern Connecticut held a slight 32-31 rebounding edge.
SNHU returns to action Wednesday evening when it hosts UMass Lowell for a 7:30 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
