Maybury, Rines Garner NE-10 Awards
SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – Freshmen Troy Maybury (South Portland, ME) of the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team and Tim Rines (Northfield, NH) of the Penmen baseball team won weekly awards from the Northeast-10 Conference, it was announced on Monday. Maybury was named the league’s Co-Player and Freshman of the Week, while Rines was named the Freshman of the Week.
In addition, three other SNHU student-athletes, Brandon Hammermeister (Calgary, ALB) of the hockey team, Gerald Carter (Harlem, NY) of the men’s basketball team and Scott Strong (Naperville, IL) of the baseball team were all named to their respective weekly honor rolls.
Maybury totaled two goals and two assists as the Penmen advanced to the Northeast-10 semifinals for the fifth straight season with a 5-3 win over Assumption College. He had a hand in each of Southern New Hampshire’s first four goals in the contest, including an assist on the eventual game-winning goal. Maybury currently ranks third on the squad in scoring with nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points.
Rines, a graduate of Merrimack High School, had a fine start to his collegiate career, going 7-10 (.700) at the plate in two games over the weekend with four runs batted in. In his collegiate debut Saturday against Molloy, Rines went 5-6 at the plate with three runs batted in and a pair of doubles. Sunday against Dowling, Rines went 2-4 and drove in another run.
Hammermeister registered a goal and an assist in Saturday night’s victory. With his effort he moved into a tie for eighth place on SNHU’s career scoring list with 146 career points. This season, he leads the Penmen with 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points.
Carter averaged 16 points, 4.5 assists, four rebounds and two steals last week in a pair of games. He totaled 21 points and five boards in the regular season finale at Saint Michael’s, then added 11 points and seven assists in a first round Northeast-10 tournament loss to Bryant. Carter finished the season third on the team in scoring with his 12.4 ppg average while leading the team in steals (40) and ranking second in rebounding and assists.
Strong batted .500 (4-8) in a pair of games over the weekend while also scoring four runs. The junior outfielder was 3-4 with a double and two runs scored in a loss to Dowling on Sunday.
