Postcolonial Encounters focuses on theýinterdisciplinary aspects of literatures that hveýbeen historically silenced by the mechanisms ofýcolonial powers. This course will attempt toýretrieve from the margins those voices thatýGayatri Spivak (following Antonio Gramsci) hasýcalled "subaltern." As such, our task will be toýtheorize the notions of power and powerlessness,ýmargin and periphery, first and third world,ýnationalilty, race, identity, and globalizationývia the close readings of various postcolonialýtexts.
