This course surveys the history of socialýdevelopment as a background of social theory. Itýintroduces students to the historical andýtheoretical political economy background toýgraduate studies in community economicýdevelopment. Topics include the expansion ofýmarkets in Europe, agricultural transformation,ýdiscoveries, European domination of world trade,ýcolonization, industrialization and urbanization,ýthe church and the community, the state and theýnation, and treatment of poverty and relatedýinstitutions in different periods in history.
