Technical Requirements for SNHU Online Courses

Two Students and a Teacher Looking at a Laptop Computer

SNHU Online requires that all students have the following programs, software and operating system on their computers prior to participating in their first online course. All SNHU Online instructors use these programs and software and may not be able to accept written work from students who are using incompatible programs. Students participating in upper level IT courses may be able to obtain temporary licenses for software required for their courses through SNHU’s MSDN alliance program. Students in courses which take advantage of this alliance program will be given participation instructions during the first few days of class by their instructors.

Apple Laptop or Desktop Computer

Macs are fully supported at SNHU and work with all of our campus systems. Keep in mind however that some of your classes may require software that only comes made for Windows computers. Macs with Intel processors can run Mac OS and Windows on the same computer. If you choose to bring a Mac, it is recommended that you install Windows using Bootcamp which allows you to use your Mac as a Mac or a Windows computer. An even better option is to install Parallels or VMWare Fusion software which allows you to run Mac and Windows at the same time. Macs are only made by Apple Inc. Discounted pricing can be obtained by SNHU students at The Apple Education Store.

Laptop Requirements

Undergraduate Day Students:
All undergraduate day students are required to have a wireless laptop computer for use in classes and other academic activities. Desktop computers may not be substituted for this requirement. As an SNHU student, you are entitled to participate in Dell's University Program to purchase a laptop. We highly recommend the computers in this program.

Online Students:
SNHU Online requires that all students have the following programs, software and operating system on their computers prior to participating in their first online course.

Additional Information

  • If you are a Game Design or Graphic Design student please refer to the other sections on this page for additional or different equipment requirements.
  • Laptop or Desktop? Whichever you choose depends on your personal preference and work style though laptops tend to offer more flexibility. Undergraduate Day Campus students are required to have a laptop.
  • Important note:  Chromebooks (Chrome OS) and iPads (iOS) do not meet the minimum requirements for coursework at SNHU, nor does the Microsoft Surface RT. These offer limited functionality and do not work with some course technologies. They are not acceptable as the only device you use for coursework. While these devices are convenient and may be utilized for some course functions they cannot be your primary device.
  • Office 365 Pro Plus is available free of charge to all SNHU students and faculty. The Office suite will remain free while you are a student at SNHU. Upon graduation you may convert to a paid subscription if you wish. Terms subject to change at Microsoft’s discretion.
  • Antivirus software is required for on campus students and will be provided if needed. Antivirus is strongly recommended for everyone. Check with your ISP as they may offer antivirus software free of charge to subscribers.

Optional Accessories:

  • Many laptops on the market today do not include CD/DVD drives. While SNHU typically does not utilize CD/DVD content, this is a good accessory to have.
  • External Hard Drive – it is always a good idea to back up your files and an external hard drive is a great way to do that.
  • Extra power cord – if you have a laptop and are frequently on the move, many people find it useful to have a second power cord – one for home and one for your bag.
  • Headphones/earbuds – many SNHU courses include audio and video content. These will make viewing and listening easier.
