The rich tradition of athletics has long been the source of pride for the family and friends of Southern New Hampshire University. Since the glory days of the Greater Boston Small College Conference, to the present status as a NCAA Division II power, the Penmen have maintained a level of excellence that is second to none. SNHU is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Northeast-10 Conference.

That tradition continues as the Penmen men’s basketball team heads to the Elite Eight Tournament in Evansville, Ind., as NE-10 champions and winners of the NCAA Division II East Regional. The Penmen look to duplicate a Division II National Championship achieved this past season by the Penmen soccer team.

SNHU captured its seventh regional title in program history defeating Southern Connecticut State University 75-58 in the East Regional. The Penmen (24-7) advanced to the Elite Eight Tournament, their first appearance since 1995, where they will face Florida Southern, the nation’s No. 1 ranked team, on Wednesday, March 25, at 7 pm EDT.

In honor of the team’s big win in the East Regional, SNHU is holding the Penmen Pride Basketball Social Media Contest. SNHU students and alumni can enter for a chance to win a trip for four to Evansville, Ind., on March 24-26 and tickets to the May 25 tournament.

To enter the contest, SNHU is asking Penmen fans to share photos of themselves showing their Penmen Pride with the contest hashtag #penmenpride. The contest is only open for a 48-hour period from noon EDT on Friday, March 20, until Sunday, March 22 at 11:59 am EDT. For contest information, follow SNHU on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. See official rules for details.

SNHU captured its first NCAA regional title since the Penmen won three straight regional crowns from 1993-95. The Penmen also won regional titles in 1979, 1980 and 1987.

The 2013-14 year was also one of the most prolific in school history. Individual feats included a national Player of the Year, six All-Americans and 19 All-Regional selections to our teams, that earned five NCAA berths, including the men’s soccer national championship and a conference-best five NE-10 championships.

SNHU excelled in the classroom as well. The Penmen had over 80 percent of its teams carry a 3.0 or higher GPA with women’s lacrosse and men’s ice hockey winning the NE-10 Team Academic Excellence Award for the highest GPA in the conference. Women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross-country and men’s and women’s soccer were also honored by their respective coaches’ organizations for their performances in the classroom, with women’s basketball being named to the WBCA Academic Top 25 for the second straight year. Individually, the Penmen had two Capital One Academic All-Americans, seven Academic All-District selections and 13 NE-10 Academic All-Conference Team members.
