"Before I knew it, my goal was to graduate as a straight A student with the highest honors."
In 2008, I began my scholastic journey at Appalachian State University in North Carolina. By the end of a difficult personal year, despite having academic honors, I dropped out of their English creative writing program. I ended up spending six months living in Mexico with friends, and I found out three days before my return trip home that I was pregnant. In October of 2010, I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, Aiden Conner. I knew I had to give my son someone to look up to.
Three months later, I was admitted and began SNHU's online English program. I didn't have high aspirations — I just wanted that degree! My first semester I got an A. The next semester, I got another A. Once I realized what I was capable of, I couldn't back down. Before I knew it, my goal was to graduate as a straight A student with the highest honors. In September of this year, I will have achieved that dream. Hopefully, I will tell this story to my Aiden one day, and he will be very proud that his mommy made her dreams come true. In the end, it was all for him.
